C&S Nursery looks to Hortica to help protect its diverse business portfolio—and help support its employees.
Santiago Rosales II pours his heart into C&S Nursery—but he also has a lot on his mind.
In addition to his 25-acre nursery in San Diego County, Calif., he oversees a retail garden center, and a wholesale distribution operation in Los Angeles. His nearly 50-member workforce needs proper training and protection on the job. And there’s climate and weather risks such as wildfires and earthquakes.
He also wants to ensure that his 25-year-old son—next in line to take over the business—is set up for growth and success in the years ahead.
“I love this job. I’m passionate about it. It's amazing to see a plant that's going to improve 24 hours a day, 7 days a week,” Rosales says.
“It’s not easy. As a proprietor, you need to know how to protect what’s yours.”
As a business owner with three distinct segments, Rosales needs to be sure all aspects of his business are properly covered. When the company’s previous insurer didn’t provide coverage after a large loss—one in which Rosales thought he was covered—he knew it was time to look for a more dedicated and thorough insurance company.
He found that with Hortica.
“You go to other insurance providers, they have no clue about what you're talking about,” Rosales said. “It's been 12 years now with Hortica, and I feel much better supported than I did in the past.”
A big component of that support is the loss control services Hortica provides its customers. Dedicated safety consultants provide hands-on training and instruction to C&S Nursey employees—and peace of mind to Rosales.
“Hearing it from the boss, sometimes it's in one ear and out the other. But hearing it from a specialist outside of the company and directly from your insurance company—they hear it, and they hear it loud and clear.
“I can sleep better knowing that my employees understand what's expected of them.”
