Fred Clarke, owner of Sunset Valley Orchids in Vista, California, is one of the world’s top orchid breeders. His one-of-a kind creations—both in color and scent—are coveted by orchid lovers and hobbyists all over the world.
Fred’s operations consist of 2 acres of greenhouse space, where he carefully groups his orchids by category and years they were pollinated. Orchids can take 3-6 years from pollination to flowering—and in that time, they require meticulous attention and care.
While he may not be classified as a major grower, his inventory could be considered priceless.
“Any risk is high because I’m selling and shipping to hobbyists, collectors, and the most discerning customers you can imagine,” Fred shares. “I—and they—look at these flowers as works of art.
“I need partners who understand my business and my flowers,” Fred explains. “We brought on Hortica because I wanted someone who understands my business and is as passionate about it as I am.”
Fred’s introduction to Hortica came from fellow growers in the San Diego area. They recommended the only insurance company solely dedicated to the horticultural industry.
He respects how Hortica takes the time to learn about his company’s entire operation, and then customizes an insurance plan that protects him for the long haul.
“Hortica showed me what my old insurance actually covered—and more importantly, the many ways it didn’t,” Fred says. “Now I’ve got the protection I need.”
Fred provides a personal touch to every plant and customer he interacts with. He wants that same type of relationship with his insurance provider. He values that he has the personal cellphone number of his insurance agent.
“It's nice to have the person who sold you the policy be the guy who's there to help you and support you when you’re in a time of need,” Fred explains.
He also appreciates the security Hortica provides—so he can devote his attention to his unique stock.
“Creating unique orchids—art pieces—for people is what I love to do,” Fred emphasizes. “Hortica brings me the peace of mind so that’s all I have to worry about.”
